This course covers the development of the Roman city of Pompeii from its origins through to its destruction by volcanic eruption in 79 C.E. Using physical remains from the archaeology of sites under Mt. Vesuvius alongside texts in translation, this course explores the lives of the city’s inhabitants, including their entertainment, housing, religion, economy, slavery, gender roles, and burial practices.
