Tenor David Hamilton has been heard at opera companies across North American and Europe during his career spanning more than thirty years. He has been a principal artist at the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera. San Diego Opera, Vancouver Opera, Washington, Opera, Opéra de Nice, Opérea de Montreal, Teatro Bellini in Catania, and the Opera Theater of St. Louis. His broad repertoire as an orchestral soloist has led to engagements with the Israel Philharmonic, Baltimore Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Illinois Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, and the Pacific Symphony.
He is Professor of Voice and Italian at Concordia College and regularly leads students to Italy to study Italian language and culture. The courses he teaches include voice lessons, Vocal Repertoire, German Art Song, Beginning Italian Language, and the Concordia Opera. For Concordia Opera, he is both the artistic and stage director. He is also the General Director of the Fargo Moorhead Opera where Concordia students are a vital part of productions as they experience their first professional work on the stage.
Among his many roles are the title role in Faust, Don José in Carmen, and Rodolfo in La Bohème. Engagements have included the title role in Manitoba Opera's Faust, La Bohème for Arizona Opera, the title role in Roméo et Juliette for Edmonton Opera, Peter Quint in The Turn of the Screw for Manitoba Opera, Alfredo in La Traviata for the Colorado Springs Symphony as well as soloist with the Napa Valley Symphony, Valdosta Symphony, Bismarck Symphony, and the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony. Previous seasons have included Ismaele in Nabucco for Edmonton Opera, soloist in Beethoven Symphony No. 9 for both the Vancouver and Pacific Symphonies, and soloist in Brahms’ Rinaldo for the Columbus Symphony.
Additional operatic engagements include the title role in Faust for Austin Lyric Opera and Central City Opera, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte with Vancouver Opera and Opéra de Nice, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni for Tulsa and in Catania, Lensky in Eugene Onegin with Scottish Opera and Manitoba Opera and Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail for Des Moines.
Mr. Hamilton is also an accomplished recitalist. Of note among his recitals across North America was the world premiere of Hugo Weisgall’s song cycle Lyrical Interval.
Among the awards he has received are First Prize in the Paris International Voice Competition, the Eleanor Steber Award, and grants from the Sullivan and Puccini Foundations.
