Dr. Mark G.A. Causapin

Assistant Professor Mathematics

Mark Causapin was born and raised in Manila, Philippines. He received his B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of the Philippines and worked for Toyota Motors before moving to New York City in 2004. In New York, he continued his career in engineering and finance. To make life more exciting, he became a math and physics high school teacher while working on his M.A. at Columbia University. After finishing his M.A., he pursued his Ph.D. at Columbia while working at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, the Fashion Institute of Technology, and the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth in Hong Kong. He completed his doctorate degree in mathematics education in 2012 and moved to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates to work at Zayed University, eventually becoming co-chair of the math department. In 2016, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to teach mathematics at Aquinas College.

Mark started at Concordia College in 2018. He teaches Elementary Mathematics, Secondary Mathematics Methods, Statistics, and other mathematics courses. His research interests have evolved over time and cover teacher training, statistics education, language and mathematics learning, and beliefs in mathematics education. He received a $1.2 million NSF Noyce grant in 2020 to fund student scholarships and research the impact of internships and mentoring on the development of mathematics teachers.

Mark and his wife, Kathleen, are members of St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish in Moorhead. He enjoys traveling, eating dim sum, renovating their house like he’s the next Chip Gaines, perfecting his squats, and long walks with his German Shepherd, Shadow.
