Ísis Jarnicki de Carvalho

Visiting Instructor, Voice Music

Ísis Carvalho is a spinto soprano from Brazil and visiting instructor of voice at Concordia College. In addition to the traditional repertoire for her Fach, Ísis performs recital literature in several languages, including Spanish, Gallego, Russian, Polish, Hebrew, Czech, and Yorubá, as well as in Brazilian Portuguese, her native language. 

Ísis has performed in American productions of Glory Denied by Tom Cipullo, The Magic Flute by W. A. Mozart, Albert Herring by Benjamin Britten, Orpheus in the Underworld by Jacques Offenbach, Hänsel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck, and in Brazilian productions of Maria Tudor by Antonio Carlos Gomes, Suor Angelica by G. Puccini, L’occasione fà il ladro by G. Rossini, Master Peter’s Puppet Show by Manuel de Falla, Trial by Jury and The Mikado by A. Sullivan, and in The Enamored Saloia and The Chimney Sweeper by Portuguese composers António Leal Moreira and Marcos Portugal, respectively.

Ísis’ primary area of interest is researching and performing works by women composers written from the 19th to the 21st centuries. Her ongoing doctoral dissertation features a performance guide with multiple suggestions for staging Liana Alexandra’s Chant d’Amour de la Dame à la Licorne, a chamber opera for soprano, cello, and piano, written in 1995. Ísis’ dissertation also explores the use of subtitles with adaptable sizing and American Sign Language for populations with exceptionalities. Her research was recently presented at the 2022 National Opera Association Conference Poster Session held in St. Augustine, Florida.

Ísis is currently a doctoral candidate in voice performance at Ball State University. She holds a Master of Music degree in voice performance from Indiana State University, as well as bachelors degrees in piano and voice performance and a graduate certificate in performance of voice literature from the School of Music and Fine Arts of Paraná (Curitiba, Southern Brazil).
