Roxana Saberi ’97, an award-winning international journalist, author, international speaker and human rights advocate, will report for all CBS News platforms. Since 2016, she has served as a freelance correspondent for CBS News and as a fill-in anchor on CBSN, CBS News’ 24/7 digital streaming news network.
Before joining CBS News, Saberi was a correspondent for Al Jazeera America, spent six years living and reporting in Iran where she opened and ran Feature Story News’ Tehran bureau, served as BBC’s freelance correspondent in Iran and filed radio reports for ABC.
In 2009 while writing a book about Iran, Saberi’s imprisonment in Tehran’s Evin Prison on a false charge of spying for the CIA gained worldwide attention. Following an international campaign for her release, she returned to the U.S. and wrote the book “Between Two Worlds: My Life and Captivity in Iran.” She continued to contribute reports about Iran and the Middle East and serve as an Iran commentator for various news organizations.
Saberi has earned several awards for her work, including the Medill Medal of Courage, the Ilaria Alpi Freedom of the Press Award and the NCAA Award of Valor for demonstrating uncommon bravery and courage in the face of grave personal danger.
She began her journalism career as a reporter for KVLY-TV, the NBC affiliate in Fargo. She then reported for News 24 Houston and has also reported for NPR and Fox News.
Saberi was born in New Jersey and raised in North Dakota. At Concordia, Saberi played soccer and graduated summa cum laude with a double major in communication and French. She has a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Northwestern University and a second master’s in international relations from the University of Cambridge.
Saberi was the 2013 commencement ceremony speaker at Concordia and in 2014 she was chosen by Concordia’s National Alumni Board to receive the Sent Forth Award.
