The Free Store is a new initiative on campus aimed at reducing waste by accepting and giving away items that would most likely otherwise be tossed.
Students were inspired to create a Free Store on Concordia’s campus after visiting one at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, during a spring break trip focused on studying sustainability policy.
“It seemed like a simple idea that would make a significant difference on our campus,” says Anne Savereide, Concordia’s sustainability specialist.
The Free Store is located on the lower level of Park Region Hall and will be staffed during specified hours.
The store accepts donations of gently used items during open hours. So far donations have included books, craft supplies, clothing and accessories.
Heightened activity is expected in the Free Store during moving days, and students are encouraged to stop by to donate and shop.
The Free Store officially opened April 20 as part of campus Earth Week celebrations.
