Best of Fall at Concordia

This morning, I had to scrape snow and frost off my car – something I was hoping to avoid for at least a few more weeks. Some people are annoyed, some might be sad, but there are always those who are excited.

Though it might be over, I think everyone can look back and agree on at least one thing: Fall at Concordia is simply the best.

Here are just a few of the reasons why:

1. Orientation

For new students and the Orientation team, the start of school was a whirlwind of name games, community service, book discussions, and beanie tosses. Whether you were part of Orientation this year or not, we can all agree that Concordia goes all out when it comes to ushering in the new students. Campus is full of life as everyone comes back from summer break and gets ready to tackle the new school year.

2. Cobber Expo

Once everyone was settled on campus, we had the biannual Cobber Expo. This was the perfect time for new students to get involved and returning students to try something new. KORD Radio blasted great music, Dance Marathon coordinated some dance moves, the foam weapon fighters showed off their skills, and Concordia On-Air ran around with a camera and microphone. Concordia has more than 100 campus organizations, so students are sure to find their niche. It was a great event and the weather, thankfully, was perfect.

3. Family Weekend

Well, the weather for Family Weekend wasn’t quite as nice (a bit rainy and chilly), but that didn’t deter the awesome events and fun atmosphere on campus. Concordia pulled off a win at the football game, much to the delight of the stands full of moms, dads, siblings, and grandparents of current Cobbers. There was a mind-blowing mind reader, an ice cream social, student panels, and even a mini-expo just for families. Family Weekend is always a great time for students to share their experience at college and reconnect with their families.

4. Homecoming

Fall on campus just wouldn’t be the same without Homecoming. This weeklong event keeps Cobbers coming back to campus long after they graduate. It begins on Sunday when the Homecoming Committee decks out the campus with maroon and gold, stringing balloons in the atrium and wrapping every railing and light pole in gleam and stream. Events happen all week long, like Coronation, Frosh Frolics, the Johnny Holm dance, a parade down 8th Street, and so much more. A student favorite is usually the traditional bonfire on Thursday night, which is a bit more extreme than your typical backyard bonfire. The Homecoming football game on Saturday was also a success, adding another win to the Cobbers’ record. Homecoming wrapped up on Sunday with an all-campus worship in Memorial and a dedication of the new Integrated Science Center.

5. Fall Break

And with that, we’re already halfway through the semester. Midterms always seem to sneak up on us, but the few days off are greatly appreciated. Students can stay on campus, visit home, or take a trip to somewhere new. This year, the Adventure, Exploration, and Risk inquiry course and Cobber finance students made their way around Europe, traveling to places like London, Paris and Zürich.

We hope you enjoyed this fall on campus and made some great memories. Now, break out your winter jackets and get ready for all the things you can enjoy this winter: making snowmen, sipping hot chocolate, snowball fights, Christmas carols, sledding, skating, skiing and more. Fall may be over, but we know how to make the most of the cold in northern Minnesota!
