Things to Do in Fargo-Moorhead (When You're Under 21)
Fargo-Moorhead offers no shortage of opportunities to its 21-and-up crowd, but fear not, minors. There is plenty of good, clean, under-21 fun to be had here, too – you just have to know where to look.
Give boba tea a try.
Teaberry is THE late-night hangout for students in downtown Fargo (perhaps because it is one of the only non-bar establishments open past 10 p.m.). The shop offers delicious fresh fruit smoothies, hot and cold teas, the comfiest couches in town, and a relaxing atmosphere perfect for beating the late summer heat or escaping from the biting North Dakota winter winds.
Hit the road – Thunder Road, that is.
Go-karts and lazer tag and mini golf, oh my! Open May-October, Thunder Road is a fun and relatively affordable afternoon destination. You can pay by the ride, buy an unlimited ride wristband, or rent out an entire attraction for a few hours!
See a cheap movie.
Remember the good ol’ days when a night at the cinema was a cheap go-to date and popcorn didn’t cost an arm and a leg? Well, those days still exist in Fargo-Moorhead and we call them Thursdays. Every Thursday at Marcus Theatres, students and faculty can enjoy a night at the movies for only $6 and get a FREE 46 oz. popcorn. Just remember to bring your school ID!
Take a stroll through a farmers’ market.
Every Saturday morning from July through October, the corner of Broadway and Fourth Avenue North in Fargo transforms from an empty parking lot into a bustling market, packed with white tents, fresh produce and smiling faces. The folks behind the Red River Market are committed to creating a space for all community members to experience the joys of locally produced food. So get up a little early on a Saturday, grab yourself a cup of coffee and a fried pie from local vendors, and get to know the people in your city (bonus: you might get to pet a dog or two).
Support local art.
Whether you’re an artist or an art enthusiast, Fargo-Moorhead is a great place to tap into your right brain. Grab a latte and check out a poetry slam at Red Raven Espresso Parlor. See a show at one of the many high school, college and community theatres in the area. Spend an afternoon at the Rourke or Plains Art museums (both free with student ID). Jam out to some local bands at The New Direction, or check out big-name artists at venues like Bluestem Amphitheater, the Fargodome or the Fargo Theatre.
Root for the home team.
If sports are more your style, you’re in luck, too. Fargo-Moorhead has plenty of places to get in the game. RedHawks baseball is a summer staple here, so get out to Newman Outdoor Field before the summer ends. When the temperature drops, take your team spirit to Scheels Arena for a Fargo Force hockey game.
Walk your way to deliciousness.
You know in the musical "Rent" when the cast asks “how do you measure a year?” Well, I measured my freshman year of college in late-night trips to Taco Bell. Concordia is located in the middle of a fast food metropolis, just steps away from T-Bell, McDonald’s, Taco John’s and the famous 8th Street Dairy Queen. It’s not fine dining, but I promise the memories made during those night walks are worth much more than a Crunchwrap Supreme.
Fraternize with the enemy.
There are nearly 30,000 college students living in Fargo-Moorhead. That’s a lot of friends to be made if we can all put aside our differences (and stop stealing each other’s beanies). One great place to form these friendships is the Tri-College Swing Dance Club. They meet regularly during the academic year and the summer, rotating locations between the three colleges and community spaces like Island Park. No experience (or partner!) is required.
