Why did you choose Concordia?

My high school band director, Eric Christenson, is a Cobber grad and urged me to consider looking at Concordia. I was first introduced to what being a Cobber is all about when The Concordia Band performed at my high school. I was blown away by the band members’ ability as musicians and how they could show they were a wonderful community while on and off the stage. However, I did not decide to attend college in general until the last minute. It wasn’t until Dr. Peter Haberman and Dr. Nat Dickey reached out and convinced me I had a place at Concordia.

When did your passion for music begin? How do you see that passion playing a role in your life after college?

I didn’t become passionate about music until my senior year of high school. I did grow up with my dad bringing me to Orchestra Hall and learning multiple instruments throughout grade school, but it wasn’t until I started focusing primarily on the tuba that I found a passion for music. I was finally able to connect with something unique and being able to identify myself specifically as a low brass musician. After college, I plan to help others find their own passion for music, just like how my professors help me now. I am majoring in performance so I can become as fluent on my instrument as possible so that I may be better suited to teach others about it as well.

What does receiving the John Philip Sousa Award mean to you?

Receiving the John Philip Sousa Award reminds me of my hard work and dedication to music. On days when I question if I deserve to be in a music ensemble at Concordia, I remind myself of what it means to have earned the John Philip Sousa Award: “In recognition of outstanding achievement and interest in instrumental music, for singular merit in loyalty and cooperation, and for displaying those high qualities of conduct that school instrumental music requires.”

What advice do you have for students who want to get involved with music at Concordia?

Don’t be afraid to show your creativity. There are not very many places as accepting of different ideas as Concordia and you should take advantage of that. Don’t let your fear of being seen and heard cover up your passion for music and being an individual.
